Don't Forget Payload Capacity

Payload capacity refers to how much weight your vehicle can carry inside — passengers, luggage, and the tongue weight of the trailer. Adding tongue weight to your hitch effectively reduces your available payload. If your vehicle has a payload capacity of 1,500 lbs and you have three passengers totaling 600 lbs plus 200 lbs of gear, you only have 700 lbs of payload remaining — meaning your tongue weight cannot exceed that figure.

Towing capacity figures assume your vehicle is properly equipped. This means using the correct hitch class, a weight-rated ball mount, safety chains, and trailer brake controllers where required. Towing without the right equipment — even under the weight limit — can void your warranty and create serious liability.
